Climate change – a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric CO2 produced by the use of fossil fuels.

The topic about the refugees has always been and will be a burning problem. And, we can say that the rising number of climate-change refugees is one of the most important issues facing our society nowadays. We live in such an age where many people are free to choose a better way of living. Yet, some are forced to make the decision to leave their homes due to political clashes. “No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of shark” (Warsan Shire, 2011) – by ignoring the trend of the fleeing refugees, the world leaders have now allowed one of the largest global humanitarian crisis to unfold. Nevertheless, the situation can be kept under control by taking actions.

The Earth’s atmosphere is changing at a rate that has surpassed most logical conjectures. A few families and groups have as of now experienced calamities and the outcomes of environmental change, compelled to leave their homes looking for a safe place to stay. I have got in contact with Unicef UK. Unicef help raise funds for organisations worldwide emergencies and development work.

I just sat and watched from my window every other day, looking at the world outside.  I was once and still am, a citizen of Uganda and I was and still am, currently a victim of something very common but is underestimated by people all around the world. My current situation was due to the severe change in our climate in Uganda.  This change has had and still has an influence on our basic livelihood essentials such as our water, the food chain and of course, the development of the economy.

Climate change is a term that came to existence in 1966 when the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) proposed an all encompassing term for variations to climate during a ten year intervals. It was eventually realised that human activity had greater impact on climate variability, than the Earth’s own natural processes, moreover it has become interchangeable with global warming for the greatest change (environmentally, economically and socially). 

The media often use inflammatory phrases which alarm the public. ‘Global warming’ or ‘extreme flooding’ are both phrases commonly used in the media, but there comes a time where people stop paying attention to them.
Over the past 100 years, the Earth’s temperature has risen by 0.4°C to 0.8°C, due to increasing volumes of carbon dioxide being produced from the burning of fossil fuels, and other factors. Another thing that is not acknowledged much is the social impacts of climate change, how it affects our global population rather than our environment.

The striking phenomenon of climate change is climate-induced displacement. Annually, across the world millions of people are being forced to flee, due to natural hazards within their country. The majority of these risks relate to extreme weather conditions. Climate change is increasing the intensity of displacement and will soon increase the frequency; as droughts, floods and other extreme weather events become widespread. According to scientist estimations, the number of those likely to relocate due to climatic reasons ranges between 50 and 350 million by the year 2050.
