It is all over the news. Today, on March 30th, 2030, after the referendum, countless debates and discussions between politicians, reluctantly but with a favor of one vote, even the Russian government signed the Berlin treaty. Now, even the biggest skeptics could not deny the global and local benefits of the treaty. It has changed the mentality of the people, it has taken globalization to the next level. But what is this Berlin treaty which everyone cannot stop talking about?

The now called Berlin treaty was actually proposed by the European Youth Parliament (EYP). The European Commission looked over it and transferred it to the EU Parliament which made some improvements and implemented it in the year 2025. It is a pact between the European Union (with all the member countries) on one side and an outside non-member country on the other. It allows travelling without visas in any of the EU countries and the non-member state that signed the treaty, it offers better conditions for education, gives an opportunity to work and live without acquiring the citizenship. Also, the easier trading conditions and overall, a deeper co-operation between the EU and the country that signed it.

The biggest reason why this treaty could start working has been the invention of the new clean, biogas by an Austrian scientist. Within a few years’ time, almost all the world switched from using oil to using this new gas because of its low cost and friendliness to the environment. It was transport which has been immensely affected by the application of this new fuel, making travelling technologies faster and cheaper. Thus, travelling around the world has never been easier and that is why the EU took the opportunity to make the best out of it. Also, countries for which oil made a huge part of their income started looking for new ways to integrate and that is where the EU has extended its friendly hand. Now, thanks to the pact, nonmember countries can link their economies with the European Union’s. Furthermore, the fact that all EU countries adopted the euro as their national currency some years ago makes trading a lot easier and convenient.

The main reason why the EYP proposed this pact was because students wanted an easier access to foreign universities. And this goal is achieved because the student exchange rate has increased dramatically, since then. The universities are busy as never before. One significant invention should be mentioned here – the “Thought Control” technology which allows a person to control things with a single thought directed to the apparatus. It is a great example of the cooperation between two students as it was created by an Indian, who came to study in Hungary, and a Hungarian student. So thanks to the Berlin treaty we are provided with the greatest technology which revolutionized many aspects of our lives.

As I have mentioned before, better working conditions as well as chances to start a business in a foreign country open under the Berlin treaty. Let’s take my brother as an example. 16 years ago, he went from Lithuania to South Korea as an exchange student. He was studying at Hanguk University of Foreign Languages, in Seoul for a year, and fell in love with the country’s culture, people, food, etc. So he decided to link his future with the country. He had a great business idea, but at the time, there were many restrictions for foreigners wishing to establish a company. But the fortune smiled at him as South Korea was one of the first countries to sign the Berlin treaty with the EU. So facing no more obstacles, my brother could fulfill his dream and set up his business in Seoul.

The Berlin treaty did not only change the economies and foreign policies, but also the way we, as a society, think and act. It is said that people have become friendlier, more tolerant and open to new things. This happened due to the movement and mingling of people around the world, which has become as vivid as never before. My homeland Lithuania, formerly part of the Soviet Union, being an independent country only for 38 years, has always been sort of conservative and not really tolerant to minorities. Also, 99 % of inhabitants in Lithuania were white-skinned people, so it was unusual for them to see other races. However, nowadays everything has changed. The Berlin treaty has encouraged many different people from every corner of the world to come to Lithuania to study, do business, etc. Lithuanians now are considered as one of the friendliest nations in Europe.

Some people say that the Berlin treaty is a dangerous thing, that it threatens the smaller cultures to be assimilated and vanish. It is also feared that some countries may become too economically and politically dependant on the EU. Of course, as everything in this life, it has its drawbacks, but most 3 of them are related to globalization. Anti-globalists claim that this treaty is responsible for the quickened and more intense pace of globalization. And, in a way, they are right. But in these modern times, this is not a negative phenomenon. Nowadays we are looking for more ways to connect with each other, therefore we begin to see ourselves less as a country or nation but more as the society of Europe or of the World. Indeed, what was once Europe without borders, now is becoming the World without borders. This pact brings unity to the world, and unity brings peace. And when there’s peace, people can start living in harmony with each other.
